Business CasualThe concept of Business Casual has confounded America's brightest and most seasoned professionals since that first fateful Friday when tens of thousands marched off to work wearing their Saturday best. After all, what is the term Business Casual supposed to mean? The two words fly in the face of each other. We have enough trouble with words like "Semi Casual" and "Festive." "Sport coat, no tie" has a much better chance to give the style challenged a little confidence on their way to the party but it doesn't read so well on the invitation. After all, the idea of Business Casual was supposed to make people feel more comfortable at work. And if they are happier at work, they will be more productive. The premise sounds sound. But in hindsight, the old "give an inch and you give a mile" is reality. Once you relax a little, it's too easy to just pack it in and call it a weekend. Business Casual should really be defined by the nature of the business. If there is nothing casual about someone's business, like managing someone's money or legal matters, then business wins out over casual. If the job is in entertainment or creative services, then, relaxed and casual is the best way to do business. When in doubt, leave the logos at home!
